The second annual Heinrich Böll Memorial weekend will take place in Achill from 13th to the 15th October 2006. Following on from a successful inaugural event in 2005, the organisers The Achill Heinrich Böll Association, are developing the weekend programme of lectures and events as a tangible memory of the Nobel laureate Heinrich Böll, who lived in Achill, and whose home there is now a residency for writers and artists. This years programme examines the work and connection to Achill of two prominent writers Peader O Donell and Ernie O Malley . Both men fought in the war of independence and on the republican side in the civil war. They fought together in The Four Courts, and later worked together on the Bell Magazine. They both visited Achill on a regular basis and contributed to the cultural heritage of the Island.
Fee for the full weekend (includes lunch Saturday and Sunday) is € 45.
